Sustainable Business Practices > Efficiency
In this series of blogs, we’ve covered simple ways to help reduce your carbon footprint. While they are easy, they make a significant impact on the way you do business. We’ve already discussed how your business can reduce restroom waste and improve the quality of your cleaning products to minimize your environmental impact. In this final installment, we’re putting the focus on energy efficiency and how to compost to round out your greener business strategies and reduce your Environmental Liability.
Ensuring energy efficiency.
Whatever appliances your business requires, you can determine their energy efficiency by looking for the energy star logo. The more stars it has, the more efficient it is. If you’re unsure about your specific appliances, you can research online. However, it doesn’t end there. The way in which you utilize your appliances makes a huge impact on your energy consumption.
Turning appliances off when they are not in use, and investing in high quality energy efficiency appliances is the best way to minimize environmental impact and save money on utility costs each month.
Composting.
The idea of composting is still relatively new. However, simple composting practices are easy to implement and reduce the amount of waste you and your employees contribute. Ask yourself the following questions to determine how to create an efficient strategy:
- Do you already recycle?
- Where are the main eating locations in your office?
- What trash cans do employees typically use?
- Does building management need to be included in the composting plan?
- Are there any other businesses within your building that can join your compositing efforts?
- Does your city collect organic waste separately?
- If there are no hauling services, what other options do you have for using the compost your office creates? Are there any community gardens or school gardens nearby? Maybe you have some employees who would gladly use the compost in their own gardens, or it could be used for office plants or landscaping around your office.
Here are some additional tips for implementing a successful composting program within your office from the environmental nonprofit organization Sustainable America:
- Make signs that indicate what can and cannot go into your system.
- Provide training at the start of your program to teach employees best practices.
- Make sure your maintenance crew knows how to handle the food waste receptacles.
- Keep track of how much food you successfully divert
