Preventing Sitting Injuries > Taking Breaks
In our last post, we explored some of the ways that bankers can prevent injuries from the effects of sitting for long periods of time. The most beneficial way to counteract harming the body from sitting for prolonged periods of time is to get up and get active. Whether you choose to walk around or get some simple exercise in, breaking up the sedentary time at work can help your body fight injury. As we dive deeper into this solution, ensure your financial institution is protected with a Bankers Workers’ Compensation Insurance program.
Get moving.
A new paper shows what many of us may have already guessed: We burn far fewer calories standing than we do walking. But just getting up to stand and stretch is better than staying put — a finding that’s bolstered by two other recent studies. If you work the standard nine-to-five schedule, one study suggests that all it takes is roughly 16 minutes of extra movement each day, explains Business Insider.
The best thing for you to do is to get out of your seat, even only momentarily, as often as possible. Walk the hallways, go get water or a snack, or even just take a stroll outside. It doesn’t need to be a monumental time spent out of your chair. Realistically, your to-do list is just as long as the next person’s, but just standing and walking for a few minutes can decrease your potential for injury, all while burning calories.
Walking is the best remedy.
Walking for only 2 minutes each hour gives your body the physical boost it needs. Even if you’re waiting on a phone call, or taking one, just roam around your office for a few minutes. The littlest things can make a huge difference in your overall health, both short and long term.
